Sharia and the Archbishop of Canterbury
The Daily Telegraph - February 9th 2008
For once, we may have cause to be grateful to the European Court of Human Rights. It ruled in 2003 that sharia is incompatible with the fundamental principles of democracy and European values.
The court upheld a decision by the Turkish authorities to ban an Islamist political party that was seeking to impose a theocratic regime based on sharia.
I would rather we set our own legal precedents than fall back on judgments from Strasbourg. However, in this case I am glad that Europe whose entire legal system is based on Judaeo-Christian values is providing a lead for our own legislators to learn from, not least Archbishop Rowan Williams, who sits as one in the House of Lords.
