June 2013: With the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of the UAE, HE Dr Anwar Gargash, the Ambassador of the UAE to the EU, HE Dr Suleiman Hamid Al Mazroui, and his MEP colleagues including the Chairman of the EP-UAE Friendship Group Mario David, Anna Ibrisagic and Ivo Vajgl. I am a strong friend of this moderate Arab Gulf State which fights extremism and where 120,000 British citizens live. The UAE is the second largest Arab economy and a regional air travel hub. UAE is currently negotiating visa free travel for its citizens with both the UK and the EU Schengen areas. I discussed the situation in Syria, the Middle East peace process and the Iranian nuclear threat posed to the region as well as human rights in the UAE.

June 2013: With officers and instructors of TS Trafalgar Merton Sea Cadets at their annual inspection last night. The unit is the third oldest in London and has been in existence since 1911. The Sea Cadets is a national charity that inspires young people through nautical adventure and each unit is run by volunteers. Cadets join at 10 as juniors and its members can carry on until age 18. You can find out more about the Sea Cadets at www.facebook.com/seacadetsuk

June 2013: At a working lunch as a guest of the EU-Ukraine Business Council in the presence of Viktor Yushchenko, the former President of Ukraine; Bernard Kouchner, former Foreign Minister of France; David O'Sullivan, Chief Operating Officer of the EEAS; Konstantin Yeliseyev, the Ukraine Ambassador to the EU; and Pawel Zalewski MEP. We discussed negotiations for an EU-Ukraine Association Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement which will be debated at the Vilnius Summit in November 2013. On behalf of the ECR I strongly support the ratification of the agreement.

June 2013: Participating at the Alliance of European Conservatives & Reformists conference in Madrid with my MEP colleagues Daniel Hannan and Edvard Kozusnik

May 2013: With the Serbian Prime Minister, Ivica Dacic following a debate regarding the breakthrough agreement in the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina over relations between Serbia and Kosovo. I participated in the debate as a longstanding friend of Serbia and I welcome the agreement as a way of ensuring peace and security in the Western Balkans.

May 2013: With the Ambassador of the UAE to the EU, Suleiman Hamed Al Mazrouri, the Ambassador of Kuwait to the EU, Nabila Al-Mulla, former President of the European Parliament, Hans Gert Poettering and accompanying dignitaries.

May 2013: Talking to H.E the Speaker of the Arab Parliament, Ahmed bin Mohammed Al-Jarwan and the Ambassador of Kuwait to the European Union, Nabila Al-Mulla following an exchange of views regarding cooperation between the Arab and EU parliaments in which I participated.

May 2013: With the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh, H.E. Dr Dipu Moni MP, accompanied by the Bangladeshi Ambassador to the EU, H.E. Mrs Ismat Jahan, at a reception to honour the Foreign Minister's visit to the EU institutions. I am a long-standing friend of Bangladesh and spoke in recent debates in support of the Bangladeshi government during the violent riots and the terrible fire and building collapse tragedies at two Bangladeshi garment factories. During the debate in the Foreign Affairs Committee I also raised the role of Bangladesh in the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) and the plight of the Rohingya refugees as well as the state of the ongoing war crime trials.

May 2013: With H.E. Vuk Jeremic, President of the 67th session of the UN General Assembly and former Foreign Minister of Serbia. I participated in the Foreign Affairs Committee debate with Mr Jeremic on issues such as the crisis in Syria and whether the little known procedure "United for Peace" might be used to overcome the veto by Russia in the Security Council, whether the UNGA needed a Parliamentary Assembly and whether the UNSC permanent members should be expanded to new countries such as Brazil, India, Germany and Japan. I also intervened when the controversial issue of an EU Security Council seat was raised which he firmly opposed on behalf of the ECR Group as it would threaten the UK position. He also raised the issue of the Pristina-Belgrade dialogue brokered by the EU and the recent agreement for better Serbia-Kosovo cooperation.

May 2013: With hosts Marije Cornelissen MEP (Dutch Green and LGBT rights activist) & Bruno Selun (Honorary Secretary of the LGBT intergroup in the European Parliament) at an exhibition to mark the International anti-Homophobia day. I was interested to learn that the UK was ranked as the most tolerant and least homophobic country in the whole of the member states of the Council of Europe comprising of 49 states from Albania to Russia and which also includes all 27 EU countries.
