March 2014: With former President of Ukraine, Viktor Yushchenko, after an extended exchange of views in the European Parliament regarding the Russian invasion and annexation of Crimea and the military threats to the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine.

March 2014: Being interviewed by RTE (Spanish State Television) regarding my article published in the Spanish leading daily newspaper "El Pais" commenting on the crisis in Ukraine following Russian military invasion.

March 2014: I moderated the second session of a conference at the European Parliament on the subject of ‘Peace and Security in Asia Pacific’. As Chairman of the European Parliament Friends of Taiwan, this is an area in which I take much interest. The conference focussed on cross-strait relations (historic, present and future) between the Peoples’ Republic of China and Taiwan, the Republic of China, as well as wider issues of security in East Asia.

March 2014: I met an inter-faith delegation from Indonesia to hear their views on the levels of religious freedom within Indonesia. As Chairman of the European Parliament Friends of the Ahmadiyya Muslims Group, I was particularly keen to hear about the situation from the Ahmadiyya perspective. I was saddened to have my understanding of the situation, in which minority religions are facing persecution, confirmed by the group.

March 2014: I gave a live interview to Euronews at their Brussels studio on the current situation in Ukraine. As a long-time friend of Ukraine and specialist on the country, I am following developments closely. I reiterated my views that the EU needs to impose strong sanctions against the Russian Government and those closely associated with it for as long as Russia remains in military occupation of Crimea. I used the opportunity to highlight the gravity of the situation and of the need for EU Member States to freeze the assets of those associated with the Yanukovych regime.

March 2014: Attending the Ealing Animal Welfare Bazaar in my London constituency. Here I am at a stand raising the issue of better conditions for battery hens and caged birds. I am a member of the EP animal welfare intergroup and have a long standing interest in supporting measures to raise standards in fishing and farming. The European Commission is proposing a new animal welfare package with better inspection and enforcement across the EU which will be welcomed by all those interested in this humane policy area.

February 2014: W recently attended the manifesto launch of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB). With nearly 200,000 members across the UK, the FSB is the voice of small businesses – who, it should be remembered, are essential for generating new jobs in the London region. I met a number of the businesspeople in attendance, discussing the economic situation in the UK, the impact of certain EU legislation on UK business, as well as the benefits of the EU single market. I fully sign up to their demands of reducing the burden of red tape and unnecessary regulations that are impacting negatively on British SMEs.

February 2014: At a reception in Central London with the Foreign Secretary, Rt Hon William Hague MP where I discussed with him the situation in Ukraine.

February 2014: As part of the Conservative Home conference, I took part in a spirited but friendly debate with my famous Eurosceptic and brilliantly eloquent Conservative MEP colleague, Dan Hannan, and the Liberal Democrat MEP, Andrew Duff, who serves as President of the Union of European Federalists. The trio analysed and debated the UK’s future options in the European Union, as well as discussing the likelihood and potential outcome of an in/out referendum in 2017.

February 2014: Pictured with some of my fellow Conservative MEPs at the Conservative Home conference in Brussels, along with its executive editor, Paul Goodman, and contributing editor, Lewis Sidnick. The conference brought together Conservative MEPs and delegates from the business sector to discuss issues affecting the UK at a European level.

February 2014: I co-chaired a public hearing on EU-NATO relations following the European Council meeting. NATO’s relations with the EU’s Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) were discussed, particularly as to whether the two organisations are competing, and what measures can be taken to improve complementarity in order to avoid duplication and decoupling from the USA. This is especially important at a time when we are seeing cuts to EU and NATO Member States’ defence budgets, and delivering value-added and cost savings is therefore top priority.
