January 2014: Pictured with Karim Lahidji, President of FIDH -a leading international human rights group. We discussed the human rights situation in Iran under the new President, Hassan Rouhani, and also the wider geo-politics of the Gulf, and the Geneva accords on Iran’s nuclear programme. Mr Lahidji has an impressive record, having founded the original Iranian Human Rights League in Tehran during the previous imperial regime of the Shah.

January 2014: With a group of Gibraltarians visiting the European Parliament to protest at the on-going “go-slow” imposed by the Madrid Government at the border between Gibraltar and Spain. I take a keen interest, having previously represented it between 1999 and 2004 - prior to Gibraltar electing its own MEPs in the South West region of the UK. I am also the nominated advisor to the British Overseas territories.

January 2014: Welcoming a delegation of Armenian MPs to whom I gave a lengthy briefing session as to the workings of the European Parliament. I was decorated by the Armenian Republic and was recently awarded an honorary doctorate by Yerevan University during a visit to the country in November. I also enjoy good links with the British Armenian community in London.

January 2014: With William Rhodes, Chief Executive and Cllr Jonathon Read, Chairman, Your Credit Union and Robert Black, Chief Executive, Kensington & Chelsea Tenant Management Organisation. Credit Unions are not-for-profit financial co-operatives that are owned and controlled by their members, operating like a community bank. This Credit Union is currently lending around £40,000 per month; the average deposit of those contributing to the Credit Union is £1,800 and the average loan £2,200. There are around 400 credit unions in England and Wales and I am delighted to support this initiative in K&C which makes essential finance available to those who may have had problems obtaining credit in the past from traditional lenders. The ethos of the Credit Union seeks to recapture the spirit of mutual building societies and allows people to build a credit history who otherwise might be denied the opportunity.

January 2014: Pictured in my Brussels office with the Japanese Ambassador to the EU, H.E. Kojiro Shiojiri. We discussed the on-going tensions between China and Japan regarding the disputed islands in the South China Sea. I expressed the need for dialogue and confidence building measures to resolve this matter peacefully. As Chairman of the EU-Taiwan Friendship Group, I also noted the Taiwanese element to this dispute and raised President Ma's proposed peace plan to resolve the issue.

January 2014: Pictured with the Chilean Ambassador to the EU, H.E. Carlos Appelgren, and José Ignacio Salafranca MEP, Chairman of the Eurolat Assembly. I am a member of the EU-Chile Joint Parliamentary Committee and will be presenting a report with its Chairman, Mr Correia De Campos MEP, in February. Chile is a key country of the Pacific Alliance and is a proposed member of the mooted trans pacific partnership. As a fluent Portuguese and Spanish speaker I am keen to see enhanced UK-Latin America relations, which is a priority area for William Hague, UK Foreign Secretary.

December 2013: With the Serbian ambassador to the EU, H.E. Dusko Lopandic, following a meeting in the Brussels parliament to discuss the EP Progress Report on Serbia, the prospects for Serbia to open negotiations in the New Year for EU accession, and the state of the implementation of the Belgrade-Pristina normalisation package with Kosovo brokered by Baroness Ashton. As Chairman of the EP Taiwan friendship group I also raised the issue of visa liberalisation for Taiwanese citizens who can now travel to visit all EU states and Western Balkans countries except Serbia.

December 2013: With London's European Parliamentary Candidates and Prime Minister David Cameron. Ready for action!

December 2013: As a long-standing friend of Bangladesh, I addressed a Bangladesh Hearing regarding the January 5th 2014 scheduled parliamentary elections. Alongside the Bangladesh Ambassador to the EU, H.E. Ismat Jahan, and other Bangladeshi commentators, I recounted my experience as Head of an EP delegation overseeing elections in the country some years ago. I praised the standard of the proceedings and declared them to be some of the freest and fairest elections I have seen. I welcomed the direction that Bangladesh has taken to become a secular democracy, against the will of religious extremists who had sought to undermine such values.

December 2013: I gave another radio interview regarding events in Ukraine, reiterating my concern and sadness as to the on-going political crisis there. I am keen to see Ukraine sign an Association Agreement with the EU, which will cement its position as a modern, democratic, European state. Earlier in the day, I attended a solidarity event held in support of the protestors in Ukraine.
