July 2013: With Countryside Alliance Executive Chairman, Lieutenant General Sir Barney White-Spunner and colleagues and although I represent London, I am keen to support the British countryside whenever I can. Therefore I met with the Countryside Alliance on their visit to the European Parliament to discuss the importance of the UK rural economy and the issues relating to proposals to change the regulation of firearms in Europe and the possibility of a ban at EU level on the use of lead shot.

July 2013: Meeting at Europe House in central London a group of Human Rights defenders from Bangladesh and Holland concerned with the recent escalation of violence perpetrated on the Hindu and Buddhist minorities in Bangladesh reportedly as a result of the war crime trials held in Dhaka to try those carrying out major atrocities during the 1971 war of liberation from Pakistan. I take a strong interest in supporting stability and prosperity in this large South Asian secular democracy and enjoy strong ties with the large British Bangladeshi community in my London constituency.

July 2013: In the Strasbourg Parliament with senior Republican US politician John Ashcroft, former US Attorney General, US Senator, and Governor of Missouri. This meeting was ahead of the EP vote on a resolution on alleged NSA Surveillance of EU citizens and the EU delegations in Washington and New York. I discussed the issue of the right to privacy, intelligence gathering, and the Edward Snowden case and the importance of cooperation on security matters with the USA ahead of the opening of negotiations for the EU-US TTIP trade negotiations.

July 2013: With Sakharov prize winner Guillermo Farinas, who is a well-known and courageous Cuban human rights and pro-democracy dissident. Farinas was visiting the European Parliament in Strasbourg and was invited to address the ECR group where he was surprised how many MEPs were able to converse with him in his native Spanish!

July 2013: After the annual civic service at St Mary Abbots Church for the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea with the Mayor Cllr Charles Williams in his parlour.

June 2013: Observing a minute's silence today for Britain's fallen heroes on Armed Forces Day, at the War Memorial in New Malden High Street, which has three VCs named on it, invited as a guest of Malden and Coombe branch Royal British Legion. Cllr Ken Smith, a former paratrooper, gave a reading and afterwards there was discussion of the need for the armed forces to recruit more reservists. You can find out more about the opportunities here - http://www.army.mod.uk/join/20080.aspx
